Carpet Cleaner Buying Guide

By cleaning a rug and carpet correctly, you ensure a longer life and healthier appearance. Annual professional cleaning is usually recommended on carpets, but comes at an incredible cost. So doing it yourself can save you bundles. Vacuuming is important to get rid of dust and dirt which can penetrate deep into the carpet, but deep-cleaning carpet products are probably more important. Various types of equipment can be used for deep-cleaning such as steam cleaners, dry foam scrubbers or high-powered vacuum cleaners.

Cleaning Solution Products

In terms of cleaning products, there are a number of different ones available. Choices range from all-purpose cleaners to those with additional elements, such as spot removers or deodorizers. For locations that have a lot of “wear and tear” due to walking or pets, you can look for spot removers that treat stains (from food or other) and/or deodorizers which can get rid of smoke, mildew, food, or animal waste odors. Various forms are available (foams, dry powders, sprays or concentrated solutions), and you should determine which one works best for you by testing each one first in your house.

Cleaning Machine Types

With regard to cleaning machines, there are also a variety of different products available. You should first be aware that machines for homes versus those used for hotels are different. The most common home machine is the vacuum cleaner with an air pump which sucks the dirt and dust out of the carpet. This type of vacuum cleaner can be used for every type of carpet. Vacuum cleaners that use steam (steam cleaners) sometimes aren’t compatible with home carpets. So it’s advised that you know if your carpet is capable of being steam cleaned. High temperatures cleaners are also available on the market and do a good job of deep cleaning, but these are not usually gentle with home carpets. Machines that have powerful motors are better at getting out deeply embedded dirt, but could also damage your carpet. So it’s recommended that you double-check the warranty on your carpet for directions on how often you should clean it and how. Without checking first, you risk damaging your carpet or losing your warranty. It’s recommended that safety precautions be taken while working with vacuum cleaners that use water (in combination with electricity). Be sure to plug the machine into an electrical outlet which is grounded – as an added precaution use hearing protection.
